As family therapists, we realized that MANY of the problems we help families with could be prevented by creating healthy phone and screen habits from the start. We see so many teenagers struggling with depression, anxiety, poor school performance, difficulty sleeping, and even aggression because of too much screen time or conflict around screen-time limits. While it’s certainly not too late to help these families, we know they would have loved to have a good phone plan before the problems even began. Let us help you BEFORE the nagging, whining, and melt-downs begin (or at least let’s deal with them now while your kids are a little younger!).
The Screen Balance First Phone Guidebook is a 20-page step-by-step instruction book, including a phone contract, that will walk you through purchasing your child’s first phone. Here’s the first big idea: Remember, it’s YOUR phone!
Are your kids and teens:
Almost always on their phone, gaming system, or computer?
Struggling with healthy sleep due to too much screen-time?
Having difficulty completing chores and academic work due to too much screen-time?
Do you feel like screens have hijacked your family time? Even in the midst of COVID-19?
Virginia Family Therapy knows that screen-time plays an integral role in family life. For children, adolescents, and adults, spending too much time on screens can lead to difficulties with attention, depression, obesity, and work. In addition, managing screens in a home can lead to constant nagging, frequent meltdowns, and increased conflict with the people we love the most. As therapists, we know that helping families develop healthy screen-time plans can be the difference between children thriving and children surviving.
Virginia Family Therapy has partnered with Emily Helft, Assistive Technology Specialist, to develop screen-time management plans for children and families. Emily’s expertise lies in the intersection of behavior and technology— she understands how to help families develop healthier relationships with tech when it gets in their way.
The Screen-Balance Family Plan is a 60 page workbook that provides simple step-by-step directions on the why and HOW to get your children off their phones and back in their lives. We are currently offering this plan for free to a limited number of families in exchange for feedback. Our hope is to be able to provide help for families at a significantly lower cost than a full-time family therapist!
