Hi there! I am an individual and family therapist that works primarily with pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults. I specialize in working with trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral concerns, and self-harm/suicidal ideation. My approach to therapy is integrative and mainly blends cognitive-behavioral therapy, family systems, and interpersonal therapy. I believe in taking a collaborative and relational approach to treatment, being strengths-based, and utilizing humor throughout. I work to meet each client where they are at, approach everything with cultural humility and authenticity, and will always do my part in ensuring that therapy is a safe and nonjudgmental space for individuals and families of all backgrounds.
I earned my Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Communication and Media Studies from Georgetown College and then obtained my Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Indianapolis, with an emphasis in Child and Adolescent Psychology. I’ve provided therapy and assessment services in a variety of settings, including hospital outpatient clinics, intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization programs, community mental health centers, college counseling centers, and schools.
I’m originally from Kentucky but spent the last five years in Indiana and Ohio for grad school and internship. I am working towards independent licensure as a clinical psychologist at Virginia Family Therapy and am so excited about my move to Charlottesville! When I’m not working, I love being outdoors, hiking, spending time with family and friends, taking care of my (many) houseplants, and drinking lots of coffee. I provide face-to-face and walk-and-talk therapy out of VFT’s North office. You can reach me directly at mbates@virginiafamilytherapy.com.
