I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience helping children, adolescents, and families. I specialize in working with clients struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, anger management, stress management and relational problems. If you or your children feel stuck, confused, frustrated, or even scared of therapy, you are not alone and I’ve worked with many families in your shoes.
I strive to create a safe, trusting, and warm relationship with my clients while helping them develop new skills to support their growth and success. My style incorporates a fun and active session, compassionate listening, and a ready sense of humor. This approach allows me to find and accentuate client strengths while also helping develop effective coping strategies. At the end of our work, I want my clients to build their own toolkit of strategies and behaviors to support healthy living. I believe that with the right combination of motivation and support, any life change is possible.
I am the former Clinical Director of the Discovery School, a therapeutic wilderness boarding school for adolescents. I have been honored to present and speak at numerous conferences, including being the Keynote Speaker at the Virginia Juvenile Justice Association’s annual conference, to share insights and offer guidance on how to help others address these problems with children and adolescents. I am also a Certified Trauma Professional and, as a therapist,I incorporate techniques based on family systems theory, mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral interventions, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, motivational interviewing, and affect theory-based emotional regulation techniques.
My other loves include trail running, paddle boarding, hiking with my wife and our two daughters, and listening to my vinyl record collection. On Sundays in the Fall, you can usually catch me in the Living Room watching the NFL. I work out of the Pantops-Olympia Office and can be reached directly at mbrowning@virginiafamilytherapy.com
