Hello! I specialize in working with couples, young families, and parents— as well as individuals/families with someone on the autism spectrum. With couples, I help my clients understand the underlying issues that keep them locked in frustrating cyles and work their way back towards the connection that they want. With families, I help with behavior management strategies, parent coaching, partnering with schools, and developing a calm and supportive home environment where all members can thrive. As you can imagine, my experience with couples is vital for understanding and supporting the whole family. With individuals, I help clients explore and work through issues that have led them into substance abuse, anxiety, and other challenges. I also have significant experience with military/veteran clients and families.
My approach is warm and supportive; clients feel welcome and able to open up at a deep level. I see my role as a “temporary attachment figure,” helping you grow, regain strength, and repair relationships. With couples, my work is guided by Emotionally Focused Therapy as well as the Gottman Method. With children and families, I utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My work focuses on the whole person– taking into account mental, physical, spiritual, and relational well-being.
I am a Resident in Marriage and Family Therapy and supervised by Jeff Jackson, LMFT. I earned my MS in Human Development from Virginia Tech.
I live in Arlington, VA, with my husband and two children, ages eight and ten. I am passionate about family well-being, physical fitness, home improvements, gardening, and lifelong learning. Some of my past life adventures have included living in Dunedin, New Zealand, and training in Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu martial arts forms. I work out of the Falls Church office and provide walk-and-talk therapy, face-to-face sessions in the office, as well as teletherapy. You can reach me directly at mbeck@virginiafamilytherapy.com.
