I specialize in teenagers and young adults struggling with eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. I also have a special interest in working young women athletes, who are frequently high achieving and need support as they learn how to put less pressure on themselves. I strive to help my clients think flexibly and establish a healthy mind-body connection, and frequently use movement as part of our sessions. I believe that when we know better, we do better, and I encourage reflection and initiative towards my clients feeling confident and capable.
I am originally from outside of Chicago and attended the University of New Hampshire as an undergraduate, where I rowed crew. I earned my Masters in Counseling from Northwestern University and have extensive experience working with youth in sports. Additionally, I have worked as an outpatient therapist for teens and adults struggling with eating disorders. I am excited to bring this knowledge and experience to the Charlottesville/Crozet community.
I work out of the Crozet office and provide face-to-face, walk and talk, and/or teletherapy sessions. I am a Resident-in-Counseling and am supervised by Matt Browning, LPC. You can contact me directly at mnelson@virginiafamilytherapy.com.
